Emergency Medical Services Response to New York City

As of Midnight, Monday October 8, 2001 mutual aid ambulance deployment to the Fire Department of the City of New York ended.

The Fire Department and the New York State Department of Health can not begin to express our thanks to all of the EMS Providers, Ambulance Services and County EMS Coordinators who worked to supply resources during this time of tragedy.

During the 28 days that mutual aid ambulances from across New York State were deployed, the Fire Department was able to maintain its level of service and response times to the residents of the City of New York. This was only possible because the mutual aid ambulances deployed were available to stand-by at the WTC site to provide transport to the rescue and recovery workers allowing FDNY resources to remain in their 911 system.

The deployment of ambulances to this catastrophic event was truly a state wide response. Ambulances from 59 counties were either directly deployed or on stand-by for deployment. In all 525 ambulances were deployed to New York City.

Every member of every EMS agency in New York State should be proud of the professionalism that was exhibited by the services that were used in this deployment during a time when some of our EMS colleagues gave their lives in an effort to help others.

Thank You.
