Health Commissioner Asks Staten Islanders to Support Soda Tax
Staten Island has the state's second-highest obesity rate, as well as the second-highest consumption of sugar-sweetened beverage, State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., noted today in advance of a rally today at Coca Cola Sales and Distribution Facility, 400 Western Ave., Staten Island.

New York's two top doctors – State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines and New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley – flanked by the Public Health Association of NYC (PHANYC) and the deans of schools of public health, urged passage of the sugary beverage tax Friday, citing high rates of obesity and the scientific evidence identifying these beverages as the leading culprit.

State Health Department Offers Public Health Summer Internship Program
The New York State Department of Health is now accepting applications for the 2010 Public Health Works! Undergraduate Internship Program. The eight-week program, which introduces college student interns to the field of public health, will run from June through August 2010. Applications are due March 26.
