Information for Consumers - Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B infection is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). More than 250,000 persons die worldwide each year of hepatitis B associated acute and chronic liver disease. An estimated 1.25 million persons in the United States have chronic HBV infection. HBV is spread by sexual contact with an infected person; sharing needles during injection drug use; occupational needle sticks or sharps exposures; or from an infected mother to her baby during birth. Immunization with the hepatitis B vacccine is the most effective means of preventing HBV infection.
