Subject: Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Dear Administrator:
Recently, the legislature passed Amanda's Law, which went into effect on February 22, 2010. Under Amanda's Law, Executive Law § 378 (5-a) is amended to require that all existing and newly constructed multiple dwellings with a carbon monoxide source in or attached to the structure, including nursing homes, have an operable carbon monoxide detector installed.
Amanda's Law and the emergency regulations implementing the law may be viewed at http://dos.state.ny.us/code/COAlarm.htm.
Information on the dangers of carbon monoxide may be viewed on the Department of Health website at: http://www.nyhealth.gov/environmental/emergency/weather/carbon monoxide.
Questions regarding the specific requirements for nursing homes in your locality should be directed to your local Building Department.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline Pappalardi
Director
Division of Residential Services
