New York State Department of Health Recognizes National EMS Week
National EMS Week Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Theme Honoring Our Past, Forging Our Future
ALBANY, N.Y. (May 21, 2024) - The New York State Department of Health recognizes National Emergency Medical Services Week, observed May 19-25, by acknowledging EMS professionals who dedicate their lives to care for and protect New Yorkers. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of National EMS Week with the theme Honoring Our Past, Forging Our Future.
"During National EMS Week we recognize and acknowledge the phenomenal work that EMS practitioners do during times that can be chaotic and traumatic," State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. "The Department supports our EMS staff and everyone in the EMS community as we honor the difficult work and commitment of thousands of EMS practitioners throughout New York State. Their selflessness saves lives every day."
First Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Paramedics, Physicians, EMS Officers, and Dispatchers all work within an Emergency Medical Services System, which includes various types of EMS agencies.
EMTs perform vital, non-invasive procedures that save lives and mitigate harm at emergency scenes. Skilled in safe patient transport, EMTs also deliver crucial out-of-hospital care. Their capabilities include administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), providing oxygen, managing glucose levels for diabetic individuals, assisting with asthma attacks or allergic reactions, stabilization of fractures, and preparing patients for transport to medical facilities.
Paramedics are the most highly trained professionals in out-of-hospital emergency care. They deliver critical interventions, including administering medications, initiating intravenous (IV) lines, managing advanced airway situations, performing resuscitations, and providing essential support to trauma victims.
