Statement from New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald on Preparing for First Winter Storm of 2024
ALBANY, NY (January 5, 2024) – “As the first winter storm of 2024 is expected to move into much of the state this weekend, I want to remind all New Yorkers to take precautions to stay safe, whether you’re hunkering down indoors, or spending time outside.
It’s best to avoid driving, if possible, but for those who must drive, I urge you to take it slow and give plow trucks plenty of room as they work to clear the roads. Visit 511NY.org for real-time information on road conditions before traveling.
If you’re spending time outside, take extra safety measures to reduce the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. Be sure to wear extra layers to reduce body-heat loss. Do not ignore shivering because it’s the first sign that the body is losing heat and a signal to take a break and get inside.
Since cold weather can put an extra burden on the heart, those with cardiac conditions or high blood pressure should take it easy when performing any strenuous activities outdoors, including snow shoveling.
To reduce the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning indoors, check to make sure your vents are not blocked by snow or ice and ensure there’s a properly working CO alarm.
Finally, please remember to check on your elderly neighbors; take care of yourself and each other.”
