About Asthma Deaths and Death Rates

Data are collected from death certificates. All deaths receive an ICD-9 code (before 1999) or an ICD-10 (1999 and later) indicating the primary reason for the death. The codes used for asthma are ICD-9 (493), ICD-10 (J45-J46). The source of the data is the Bureau of Biometrics and Health Statistics.

The mortality rates are rates per 1,000,000 persons. Both crude and adjusted rates are presented, rates were adjusted using the 2000 US Standard Population.
